Stateless Maps

“The rose leaves, which accompany the geometrical shapes that the artist forms on the raw canvas using rust stains, and whose color will change with time, serve as a basis for the composition and also as a map bearing the traces of people and their moments of experience. The works that are based on nature both in terms of material and form are reminiscent of resurrection and re-birth following death and destruction.”

Contemporary Istanbul 2017

Ahmet Çerkez focuses in his works primarily on the extensive space that human beings inhabit in time due to their greed and self-centredness, despite their relatively short life span, and on the pain and tragedy that this paradox engenders. The artist expresses the spiritual pain that human beings su er in a simplistic manner using a limited palette, a raw canvas, and a poetic and somewhat sorrowful style. While rendering on his canvas the traces of time from the perspective of the life-death dichotomy, he transforms the traces of the process using the technique of transferring dry petals and circular rust stains onto the canvas.

Contemporary Istanbul 2016

In Ahmet Çerkez’s works, we may notice surfaces meeting the viewer in the purest and simplest form of expression. The figurative impressions on the surfaces point toward an expressionist structure which engages with the viewer, while exposing the freedom of the artist in his unique form of expression. The objects/beings on the impressions lose their original meaning (and their characteristics) and consequently become abstract objects.
